The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
